Digging in the Dirt

“It’s good to have dirty hands…sometimes.”

–Olivia

We went flower shopping a couple of days ago and, oh, the colors!  Olivia sucked in her breath as soon as we walked in to the greenhouse.  She sat in the wagon as I loaded up some annuals for us to plant in the front.  As all Michiganders know, the first annuals of the spring are irresistable after the long, grey winter.

We planted imaptiens–an obvious choice for a three year old, I know!

At home, I showed Olivia how to gently pull each flower out of its pack and loosen the roots.  Then she learned how to dig holes in the dirt, place the flower in and cover it up with soil.  Every time she pulled out a flower, she held it close, kissed it and said, “I love you, beautiful flower.”  It was amazing to watch her chubby hands gently cradle each plant as she put it into the ground.  After getting it in the dirt and patting the soil around the roots, she would ask, “There, is that better?”  and move on to the next one.

Needless to say, 48 plants took a long time to get into the ground!  It was late by the time we got inside; I was suprised to see that the clock read 8pm.  That night, as Olivia started to drift off to sleep, she called toward the window, “Good night little flowers!”
